Milano is the hub of commerce for Italy and very different than the other large cities, such as Rome, Florence, and Venice. What makes it unique is its focus on fashion, shopping, and business. The city doesn't have as much of the Italian lackadaisical laid-back "whenever" feel that you get in Amalfi or the Tuscany region but more so it possesses a sense of big city, commerce, and hustle bustle. Milan is in a good location and is easy to fly into and out of, and the train system makes it easy to reach other cities in a few hours time as well.
As for the dining options, the food just can't be beat in Northern Italy, specifically in Milan. There are SO many fantastic places to eat and so many specialty dishes, you can easily gain 5 pounds in just a few days. There are also many really nice hotels located throughout the city. Stop in Milan for a few days and shop till you drop. It is truly the fashion capital of the world and a place for Italy enthusiasts, shopping connoisseurs, and food junkies to visit. Make sure to stop by for a meal at Paper Moon in the heart of the fashion area near the cathedral or on the canal at Il Torchietto on Via Ascanio Sforza. Their ravioli and risotto are to die for and the desserts unbeatable.
