Regent: Russia & the Baltic
Russia was my destination in November, and like my earlier trip there several years ago, I found it to be one of the most exciting of all destinations! It has so many lavish palaces, exotic brightly colored onion dome steeples, incredible works of art by world renown artists and totally unknown Russian artists, one of the most serious musical heritages anywhere, and now can offer luxurious accommodations and delicious food. Add to the mix the history of the tsars and their tragic end, the years of Lenin, Stalin, and the recent heads of state, and the deaths and deprivations the Russian people suffered at their hands, and witness the new exploding economy and the new capitalist society that is changing daily, and you will understand why there is so much excitement to be found when you visit Russia!!
This cruise on this date includes a free day trip to Moscow from St. Petersburg, with flights, to see the Kremlin and all its' treasures, including the fabulous jewels and other treasures of the tsars, plus other sites of interest.
You will also experience a complimentary shore excursion in Tallinn, and a cocktail party on the ship as a Virtuoso client.
Explore the ancient towns of Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki, as well as Moscow, St. Petersburg and Tallinn, Germany, within a few days! What a wonderful trip!!

Voyager Club
Tallinn Aug, 18 2008 | Full-day City Sights with Lunch
Tallinn is a quintessential medieval city — fortified walls, 13th-century buildings, cobblestone streets — on Estonia's Baltic coast. The Ests are ethnic and linguistic cousins of the Finns. The Finns never ruled Estonia, but virtually all of Estonia's other neighbors have "colonized" the republic in the last millennium. The saga is varied: first came the Danes (who founded Tallinn), then in the 16th century the Swedes arrived (they imposed the Lutheran Reformation), the Poles followed (and monopolized the 17th century), and finally the Russians arrived (they first laid claim in the 18th century, departed in the early 20th century — and then came back in 1939). True independence was not achieved until 1991.
Despite all of these "colonial" influences, few places in Europe have managed to retain the aura of the 14th and 15th centuries as well as Tallinn. We begin our Voyager Club day in Old Town. We'll wander the winding cobbled streets, admire the soaring spires, and stand in awe of the huge defensive walls. In the Upper Town, also known as Cathedral Hill, we'll visit the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevksy Cathedral, the Gothic Lutheran Church, and Toompea Castle. The castle was built in 1219, and is the seat of the Estonian government. The view of the Lower Town is spectacular.
As we descend along the Long and Short Leg Streets, we'll explore the Town Hall, the 15th-century apothecary shop, the medieval guildhalls, and Holy Ghost Church. An Estonian feast follows at one of Tallinn's finest restaurants. Local fare will be complemented with fine European wines. We'll also be treated to a performance of live folk music, which will include a rendition of a portion of the nearly 150-year-old national epic, Kalevipoeg.
Following our luncheon, we'll visit St. Catherine's Arts and Crafts Center. Here artisans create beautiful and unusual objects. En route to the ship, we'll pass the festival grounds at Kadriorg Park and the quaint Pirita Marina as well as Estonia's most famous monument, Russalka — the mermaid.
Approximate Length: Six hours.
Suggested Attire: Casual wear with comfortable shoes. Moderate walking on cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces.
PLEASE NOTE: All Voyager Club events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. Regent Scandinavia and Russia Cruise on August 16th-23rd, 2008
Duration: 14 Hours.

MOSCOW DAY TRIP Code: STP-3519
This tour gives a unique opportunity to explore the beauties of the Russian capital in one day. A forty-five minute drive takes you to Pulkovo airport where you will have to pass through check-in procedures and board your plane for the one-hour flight to Moscow.
Your Moscow tour begins from the airport. On the way to the Kremlin, the motorcoach will travel in convoy through the city center escorted by a police car. Your guide will introduce you to the history of Moscow as you drive along the main thoroughfares en route to the Kremlin. Upon arrival you walk from the motorcoach parking area, through the gates of the Kremlin where you will visit first the Armory Museum with its splendid display of carriages, costumes, and treasures from the time of the Tsars. Included among the treasures are the Faberge eggs, furniture, jewelry, bookbinders studded with precious gems and coronation crowns of the Tsars and Tsarinas. From the Armory Museum, walk up to Cathedral Square and visit Assumption Cathedral. On the Kremlin grounds you will see the Tsar-Cannon and Tsar-Bell. A set menu lunch will be served at either the National Hotel overlooking Red Square, or at the Café Pushkin, a gorgeous building housing an antique pharmacy and library where books, telescopes and globes lend themselves to philosophic meditation, recalling the times of this great literary figure.
After lunch you will visit the stunning Christ Savior Cathedral, which was completely demolished under Stalin and recently rebuilt. Next visit Red Square for free time for exploring, photographs and shopping in the G.U.M. store. In Red Square you can see the Kremlin Walls, Lenin's Tomb, St. Basil's Cathedral and just a short walk is the Bolshoi Theater. There will be approximately 1½-hours free time for shopping, but be sure to keep track of time and the meeting place.
Please note: Most convenient restrooms available are on the plane, at the Armory Museum and at lunch. The air-conditioning on the plane may only start once the engines are running and therefore the plane may be warm until after take off. You may wish to obtain some rubles in St. Petersburg the day before (via bank or ATM) to make purchases in Moscow. There is also an ATM inside the G.U.M. store. Bring small denomination U.S. bills for bargaining, if desired, with street vendors. Shoulders and legs should be covered for entry into the Cathedrals in Moscow. Regretfully this tour cannot accommodate guests with physical limitations. A Visa for Moscow is included in the price and is valid only for Moscow.
These are typical shore excursions for this port of call. Actual tours offered may vary and are normally assigned within 120 days of sailing date. Art, Design and Cultures Circle of Interest
From Restoration Rooms to Gallery Walls - The Hermitage from a Personal Perspective
In 1764, Russian Empress Catherine the Great purchased a considerable collection of Western European paintings. She could have no idea that her collection would lay the foundation for what is now the State Hermitage Museum - one of the largest museums in the world today with more than 3 million items. Join us for a unique opportunity to learn about and see the Hermitage with a truly Russian perspective with our local expert Vadim Palchun. He will share the history of the collection as well as take you on a visit to the museum and its restoration rooms. Don't miss this enlightening experience.
Host: Born and raised in the City of Light, Vadim Palchun is a contributor to the Hermitage as well as a well sought-after guide and expert on Russia, her art and literature, and the great collection of treasures at the Hermitage. After a compulsory 2 years in the army, Palchun graduated from Leningrad University, majoring in foreign languages and British and American literature. He then spent a year at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, where he studied art history and American and 20th century world history. Back in St. Petersburg, Palchun studied post-graduates courses on Russian History 18th - 20th centuries as well as finished a course in European Art at the Hermitage Educational Center.
On board: Join Mr. Palchun on August 16 for a Circle of Interest welcome cocktail party. In anticipation of the port of call in St. Petersburg, Vadim will give an informative talk on the history of the Hermitage art collection, from before the Communist Revolution and after. Then, Mr. Palchun will host a private dinner with your fellow Circle of Interest guests.
On shore: From the port on August 21, join your Circle of Interest group, Mr. Palchun and an additional local guide for a very comprehensive and full day of Russian Art and its significance in history. During your day you will have the very unique opportunity to visit one of the restoration rooms at the Hermitage in the company of Mr. Palchun. The restoration rooms consist of the following: painting workshop; workshop of monumental paintings and sculptures; fabric workshops; and workshops of applied art and porcelain. The restoration room to be visited will be confirmed near the date of arrival by the Hermitage authorities for security reasons. Whichever room is visited, you are guaranteed exclusive access. Your day will then continue with a tour of the collection and a visit to Vadim's personal highlights contained in this vast museum. With his knowledge of the collection, art in general and the amazing bureaucracy that runs this amazing establishment, you will have a particularly unparalleled experience and will come away with a very different perspective on this amazing museum.
Please note: The tour of the Hermitage and the restoration rooms requires a considerable amount of walking. The galleries and the many stairways of the museum can be especially crowded. This tour is not recommended for guests who have difficulty walking and standing for periods of time in excess of 2 to 3 hours.
