Voyager Club

Juneau Aug, 23 2008 | Full-day Auke Bay Wildlife Cruise with Lunch
Alaska's name is derived directly from the Aluet word alaska and the Eskimo alakshak, which both mean "mainland." Russia sold the "mainland" — a 663,267 square mile wilderness that stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the Bering Strait — to the United States in 1867 for $7.2 million dollars. That's just two cents an acre! Juneau has been the capital since statehood was granted in 1959.

Our Voyager Club day begins with a cruise up the deep fjords of the Stephens Passage and Lynn Canal affords an extraordinary opportunity to view the unparalleled landscapes and rich marine life of the archipelago. A naturalist on board our high-speed catamaran will regale us with tales of the area's unique history as well as share his expertise on the flora and fauna.

We'll glide past the majestic Chilkat Mountains, the vast Juneau Ice Field and its teeming glaciers, and Admiralty Island National Park in search of humpback whales, Orca whales, harbor seals, Stellar sea lions, Dall porpoises, Sitka black-tailed deer, and bald eagles. You may choose to view the spectacle from the comfort of the heated spacious main cabin (with its picture windows) or from the outside observation deck.

In the 1740s Russian fur traders realized Alaska's potential. These early explorers, trappers, gold prospectors, and fisherman were drawn to the area's beauty as well as to its bounty. Gold was discovered in Juneau in 1880. And with it the tangle of dreams, intrigues, disasters, and legends. We'll learn more about frontier life as we navigate toward our festive luncheon.

After being steeped in the natural and historical drama of the inlets, islets, and canals, we'll enjoy lunch on beautiful Colt Island. A gourmet picnic of grilled Alaskan salmon and other delicious fare will be served. Cold Alaskan microbrews and West Coast wines will complement our meal.

Approximate Length: Five hours.

Suggested Attire: Casual wear that is warm (we suggest dressing in layers) with a rainproof jacket and comfortable shoes. We also suggest that you bring along a pair of binoculars. Light walking.

PLEASE NOTE: All Voyager Club events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. Voyager Club events are individually tailored for each date and arrival. Your event could be different than what's noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Voyager Club host aboard ship.
