We gathered in the Calgary airport to begin our journey to the Canadian Rockies National Parks: Banff Springs, Jasper, and Lake Louise. The Rocky Mountain range begins to come into sight a few miles after you leave the Calgary airport. We were driving in the late afternoon, and the mountains were dusted with snow from the night before. The jagged peaks towered over the road, and all of us were craning our necks to see them from every angle. When the late afternoon rays were reflected from the snow, the scene was breathtaking! We were soon surrounded by mountains, small lakes, and then the glaciers began to emerge. Every twist in the road brought a new surprise. But this was only a prelude to the mammoth glaciers later in the trip, the surreal looking jade green lakes, and the huge craggy mountains we encountered deep within the parks. The elk were mating, and we viewed a few virulent male bulls with their harems.

We were too early for skiing, but the slopes open weeks earlier there than in the US, and they even had snow in July this year. One big pleasant surprise was the excellent food in the lodges! Yum! It will be worth a return trip to experience the gourmet delight of their gastronomy! Do it all in style and luxury like I did, with Tauck Tours. You will have time to do everything!
