Regent: Paul Gauguin

If you have not been to Tahiti, you have missed some of the most beautiful tropical scenery in the entire world! Imagine traveling somewhere that nature has not been affected adversely by commercialism! This cruise goes even further away "from the madding crowd" to more distant Society Isles as well as the lush, beautiful Bora Bora and Moorea.

Travel with Linda and Stephen Young, who are hosting a complimentary Virtuoso Voyager Club excursion in Moorea with lunch. Moorea is where South Pacific was filmed, and you will pass by some of the scenes from the film, enroute to an ancient archaeological dig and a Tahitian stone temple. Join us for eleven days of natural beauty, cultural experiences, fabulous snorkeling, or just total relaxation aboard the Paul Gauguin, which has been voted over and over the #1 favorite ship of discriminating cruisers.

Voyager Club

Moorea Jul, 15 2008 | Full-day Visit of Island with Lunch
French Polynesia's Society Islands are legendary: Bora Bora, Moorea, Tahiti. Each is paradise in its own right, but only one is also steeped in myth — Moorea. The island's crystalline lagoon is protected from the sea by a gorgeous coral reef, so conditions for swimming and snorkeling are simply ideal. The fronds of swaying coconut palms rustle at the water's edge. And away from the shore, coffee and pineapple plantations roll over the fertile hillsides. The island beckoned Captain Bligh's crew to mutiny. What of the myth, you ask? Mt. Routi starred in the movie musical South Pacific as the magical Bali Ha'i.

Exquisite sights await Voyager Club members. Mount Belvedere, at the island's heart (the isle is only a 37-mile circuit in total), allows for amazing views of Moorea's other dramatic scenery — Opunoho Bay, Cook's Bay, and Mt. Rotui. We'll then travel along the coast to visit an ancient archaeological dig and a Tahitian stone temple, known as a marae. Here, human sacrifices were performed. At the Tahiti Agricultural School, the flora of the island is on display: vanilla beans, pineapples, breadfruit, passion fruit, and plumeria trees as well as a host of other indigenous plants.

As we journey back along the coast, the landscape changes. The interior of the island is rugged — and the juxtaposition from the coastline is dramatic. We'll stop briefly for photos here and there. We'll also pass the island's first Protestant church, which was founded in 1822. The church is octagonal, and is the oldest surviving European building in the Society Islands. It was built over the remains of another marae.

Lunch will be served at the five-star Sheraton Hotel Moorea. The restaurant faces the lagoon and the isle's breathtaking outer reef — and just beyond (only 12 miles away) is Tahiti — her majestic peaks rise dramatically to meet the bluest skies. One of Moorea's leading French chefs will prepare our feast of local specialties, mais oui with French flair — and our repast includes fine French wines.

Approximate Length: Five hours.

Suggested Attire: Casual resort wear with a sun hat and comfortable shoes. Light walking.
