My most poignant memory of China is my first glimpse of the Great Wall. I felt chills run up my spine as I gazed upon the endless chain of bricks extending as far as the eye could see, across the peaks of the mountains. No wonder it was visible from the moon! I was totally unprepared for the awesome sight before me, and the way it moved me. The wall looked as if it went on forever, a perfect man-made creation fit for the gods!

Back in Beijing, life proceeded as in any large city, except for the millions of bicycles! Cars were few, bicycles were the vehicle of choice for men and women alike, whether clad in trousers or skirts, low or high heel shoes. They moved in unison, as if propelled by an unseen machine guiding them in slow motion through the streets.

Aside from an occasional pagoda-style roof, it took some time to find the vestiges of the "China that used to be." Finally, behind some modern buildings, we discovered a barren strip of land that contained a lively street market, with vendors cooking a variety of aromatic delicacies on their woks. And a delicious supper we did have! And so can you! Call us for details.
