Knowledgeable local guides, luxurious accommodations, comfortable transportation and a choice of activities and amenities are immutable standards on every A&K tour.

Each year, the Great Migration, one of the most eagerly awaited and avidly observed wildlife spectacles on earth, plays itself out on the plains of Africa's Masai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park.

In homage to this amazing spectacle, we offer Wings Over the Migration: a unique safari adventure that combines efficient airplane travel with accommodation in Africa's finest lodges and tented camps.

This is a first-rate opportunity to view the great wildebeest migration, in the Serengeti during January through March, and in the Masai Mara from July through October. You'll also see large numbers and a great variety of other plains animals, including lion and giraffe, in some of Africa's most beautiful landscapes.

In the words of one of its past travellers, this is "the best trip ever, anywhere and anytime." It certainly offers a unique opportunity to see African wildlife in concentrations impossible to imagine — until your land cruiser is surrounded by a wildebeest herd that stretches to the rolling horizon.

  • Unique northern species at Samburu
  • Three nights in a tented camp in the Masai Mara
  • "Out of Africa" style farewell dinner on the banks of the Mara River
  • Optional hot-air ballooning over the Serengeti and Masai Mara
  • Wildlife viewing in the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Olduvai Gorge
  • Three Days of exploration on the Serengeti Plain

Day 2: Amsterdam — Arusha, Tanzania We board our flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania, where we are met on arrival and transferred to our hotel in Arusha. Mount Meru

Day 3: Arusha — Lake Manyara —Ngorongoro Crater After breakfast we board a charter flight to the Lake Manyara airstrip. After stopping for lunch at Gibb's Farm,we continue by road to the ancient volcanic caldera known as the Ngorongoro Crater. Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater We spend the Day in the Ngorongoro Crater, ten to twelve miles in diameter and 2,000 feet deep. As we explore this unspoiled world on an all-day game drive, we can expect to see elephant, flamingo, buffalo, lion and antelope; the Crater is also the best place in Africa to see the highly endangered black rhino. We may also encounter Maasai herdsmen and their cattle; the Crater is in their territory and the Maasai continue to co-exist with wildlife as they have for centuries. Ngorongoro Serena Lodge: B•L•D

Day 5: Ngorongoro — Serengeti National Park Today we drive to Tanzania's best-known wildlife reserve, Serengeti National Park, with a stop en route at Olduvai Gorge, site of Louis and Mary Leakey's discoveries in the history of mankind. The Serengeti is home to dozens of plains game species: antelope, gazelle, lion, leopard, hyena, giraffe, elephant and buffalo, to name a few. At certain times of the year, the annual zebra and wildebeest migration becomes the main attraction as vast numbers of these herd animals move across the plain. We take our first game drive in the Serengeti this afternoon. Kusini Camp: B•L•D

Days 6-7: Serengeti National Park We have two Days of morning and afternoon game viewing in this vast region which has been a protected animal refuge since 1929. The knowledge and assistance of our safari escorts proves invaluable as we explore in four-wheel-drive vehicles. Kusini Camp: B•L•D

Day 8: Serengeti — Arusha — Nairobi — Samburu Game Reserve A day in transit: we board a flight to Arusha, connecting on to Nairobi where we stop for lunch. We then fly to the Samburu Game Reserve in Kenya's Northern Frontier District, arriving in time for a late afternoon game drive. Samburu Intrepids Camp: B•L•D

Days 9-10: Samburu Game Reserve We have two days to explore the semi-desert regions of Samburu. On morning and afternoon game drives we'll spot species unique to Kenya's Northern Frontier District: we may see reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, vulturine guinea fowl and the graceful, long-necked gerenuk. With luck, we may catch a glimpse of the ever-elusive leopard. A visit to a traditional Samburu village can also be arranged during our stay. Samburu Intrepids Club: B•L•D

Day 11: Samburu — Masai Mara Game Reserve This morning we fly to the Masai Mara, the Kenyan portion of the Greater Serengeti ecosystem, and are transferred to our tented camp, with a first game drive scheduled for this afternoon. Olonana: B•L•D

Days 12-13: Masai Mara Game Reserve The Mara is one of the great game viewing regions of the world, containing Kenya's richest concentrations of wildlife, supplemented for several months of the year by migrant herds. Morning and afternoon game drives in the heart of this classic grassland savannah show us enormous numbers of plains game on the move; if we are lucky, we may also see lion (the Mara has Africa's densest lion population), cheetah or hyena during our stay here. We return to camp each day for lunch. In the evening we relax around the campfire recalling the events of the day. A visit to a Masai village, a hot-air ballooning excursion and a flight to Lake Victoria are among the optional activities available here. On our final evening in the Mara, we attend a unique "Out of Africa" dinner on the banks of the Mara River. Olonana: B•L•D

Day 14: Masai Mara — Nairobi —Amsterdam Today we fly from the Mara to Nairobi, arriving in time for lunch at Bahati, the Kent family home in Nairobi. Options available to us this afternoon include shopping in Nairobi or a visit to the excellent National Museum. This evening, after our farewell dinner, we transfer to the airport to board our flight to Amsterdam. Nairobi Serena (dayrooms): B•L•D

Day 15: Amsterdam — USA or Canada We arrive in Amsterdam to connect with our flight to the USA or Canada. Departures Limited to 18 Passengers.
